Sales
A Love Story

I love being ‘in sales’. Don’t you?
For me, it’s the perfect blend of relationships, problem solving, and earning enough to take the family to Disney World (IFYKYK). It’s exciting being at the tip of the spear and getting unfiltered feedback from potential customers.
It took me some time in my own career to realize that most of life is sales. When teenage me needed to use the car on saturday night… sales. When college-aged me had to lobby for a grade change… sales. When early career me wanted a raise… sales. Closed Lost on that one.
You get the idea.
I started my career in an inside sales role; the one mentioned above where I didn’t get the raise I thought I deserved. From there I took a 15 year detour, telling myself I disliked sales and sales people. Turns out I was shy, a little fearful, and I don’t like assholes. Also turns out they can be found everywhere.
Now, I truly love working with prospective customers to provide value. To me, this is what sales is. Sometimes this ends with a contract, and sometimes not. Either way, I strive to provide some value. As Zig Ziglar said: “You will get all you want in life, if you help enough other people get what they want”.
Another thing I love, is learning. Learning weird facts, the story behind the story, how things work, why things went right (or horribly wrong). I also particularly love learning about human nature, psychology, and the impact of language.
Which brings me (us?) here. Welcome to The Sales Order - a weekly newsletter dedicated to the craft of sales. I’ll admit, I’m doing this mainly for me. I feel there’s always something more to learn about sales and selling, and this is my way of capturing the journey.
